This vintage hanten is a striking example of mid-20th-century Japanese workwear, traditionally worn by craftsmen, laborers, and company staff. Unlike formal silk garments, these cotton jackets were practical, durable, and carried the bold insignia of the organizations they represented.
Design & Symbolism
Exterior:
The jacket is constructed from dark indigo-dyed cotton, with large bold white kanji printed along the lapels: 株式 関都建設 ("Kanto Construction Co., Ltd."). The back features an oversized circular crest enclosing the kanji 関都 ("Kanto"), serving as the company’s emblem. Below, striking crossed motifs extend across the lower back, symbolizing structure, stability, and strength—an appropriate design for a construction company.
Interior:
Unlike ceremonial or firefighter hanten, this example is unlined, intended for daily use at worksites, emphasizing durability and identification rather than hidden artwork.
