This striking vintage firefighter’s jacket, known as a hikeshi-banten or hikeshi hanten, represents the strength and courage of Japan’s traditional fire brigades. Dating back to the Edo period and later, these garments were worn by local volunteer firemen (hikeshi), serving both as functional workwear and as a bold symbol of group pride and identity.

Design & Details

Material: Heavyweight cotton, woven for durability and protection.

Color & Motifs:

The jacket’s base is a rich black, accented with bold woven and painted designs.

White Japanese characters line the front lapels, identifying the brigade and division leader (Yachiyo Town Fire Brigade – Yoda Division Chief).

A vibrant red stripe across the shoulders adds visual strength, signaling authority and rank.

The back features a large circular insignia, a brigade crest that served as an instantly recognizable emblem during fire-fighting efforts.

Construction: Reinforced with sashiko-style weave for strength, ensuring the jacket could endure both ceremony and the rigors of service.

Historical & Cultural Significance

Firefighters (hikeshi) in Japan were more than just first responders; they were highly respected figures in their communities.

The bold insignias and markings helped distinguish different brigades and divisions when multiple teams worked together during a fire.

Jackets like this were not only protective workwear but also ceremonial garments, worn with pride during parades, festivals, and community gatherings.
